Plan for revival of POULTRY industry demanded
LAHORE (April 06 2004): A viable plan for revival
of the POULTRY business in the country should be
introduced by the government, offering an easy
access to the grants and credits for compensation
of the losses incurred to the sector due to the
recent crisis.
The proposal was floated by a delegation of
Pakistan POULTRY Association at a meeting with
Shahab Khawaja, Chief Executive Officer of the
Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority
(Smeda) here on Monday.
According to a press release issued here, the
delegation included Yousaf Ehsan Khokhar, Central
Chairman, Abdul Basit, Provincial Chairman and Dr
Khalid Shouq, Executive Member of the Association.
From Smeda, Khalid Kifah, Head Smeda Punjab,
Arshad Hashmi, Manager Agri-business, Asad Zahoor,
Manager Sectoral Analysis and Ali Akbar Bosan,
Assistant Manager, MDG were also present on this
occasion.
The office bearers of PPA said that jobs of over
one million people directly involved in POULTRY
business were at stake due to recent upheaval in
this trade.
They observed that the entrepreneurs of this field
were not able to sustain the losses.
The situation had also made the new investors
reluctant in coming into this business, they said,
adding that POULTRY crisis had also adversely
affected the viability of the agriculture sector.
They demanded to impose ban on import of chicken
meat. They also appreciated Smeda's efforts for
holding training programmes for uplift of the
POULTRY sector.
Shahab Khawaja, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of
Smeda assured the PPA office bearers to discuss
the case of POULTRY sector in the first meeting of
the task force on SME policy development to be
held in Islamabad on Tuesday.
