PA passes Sindh Fisheries Bill
KARACHI, April 28: The
Sindh Assembly has passed the Sindh Fisheries
(Amendment) Bill, 2003 banning the use of
destructive nets ‘Bullo’, ‘Gujjo’ and ‘Katra’.
According to the amendment made under Section 21
of the Sindh Fisheries Ordinance, an imprisonment
of upto one year and a fine of Rs50,000 would be
imposed (single or both), if anyone is found
violating this law, said a press release.
Sardar Manzoor Ali Khan Panhwar, Sindh Minister
for Fisheries and Livestock and Chairman of
Karachi Fisheries Harbour Authority (KFHA)/Fishermen’s
Cooperative Society (FCS) termed this development
as a landmark in the history of Sindh province.
He said that the government has taken a very bold
step by imposing the ban on such destructive nets
through an ‘ACT’ passed by the Sindh Assembly,
which would prove to be a milestone for the poor
fishermen.
The minister further said that the present
government was committed to providing relief to
poor people and had fulfilled its promise made to
fishermen by imposing a ban on such nets
Panhwar said that the ban on nets would help in
improving the socio-economic condition of poor
fishermen.
He expressed his determination to implement the
ban on use of such nets in letter and spirit.
The minister also said that the federal government
would soon be requested to reconsider the demand
of fishermen community for imposing ban on
deep-sea fishing so that marine reserves could be
saved and made available for local fishermen.
It may be recalled that the use of destructive
nets in the coastal areas of Sindh is extremely
detrimental for juvenile fish species and shrimps
and therefore, due to its excessive illegal use in
coastal areas of Sindh marine resources were under
threat of depletion.
