No wheat, no gas, warns Bugti
MULTAN,April 29: The
Punjab has until April 30 to lift the ban on
inter-district wheat transport or Balochistan will
stop supplying it with natural gas, said Nawab
Akbar Bugti, chief of the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP)
to Daily Times over the telephone on Wednesday.
Fazl-e-Rabbani, the NWFP food minister, earlier
warned the Punjab government it would lose its
electricity supply from the Frontier if the ban
were not lifted.
The two accused the Punjab government of trying to
“cripple” flour mills in Balochistan and the NWFP
by creating an artificial wheat shortage so its
own industries could flourish.
They also threatened to cut off Punjab
businessmen’s land routes to Afghanistan, Iran and
Central Asia if the ban were not lifted. They said
unless the wheat crisis were resolved, the
national issue would become an international one.
Both the NWFP and Balochistan governments have
asked the federal government to allow them to
import wheat from Central Asia, India and other
countries if the Punjab government does not lift
the ban by April 30.
