New cotton variety to be evolved
LAHORE (April 18
2004): A private firm, presently dealing in
agro-chemicals formulation, would introduce a
high-yielding and disease resistant cotton variety
for commercial sowing by the year 2006.
"We have developed the strain, a blend of
Egyptian, Pakistani and Chinese lines," Dr Khalid
Hameed, Business Manager of Ali Akbar Group, told
APP. This will be the second variety of cotton
crop ever developed in the private sector in
Pakistan.
Dr Khalid Hameed said that research is also going
on for the development of a Bt. Cotton, a
transgenic variety with in-built resistance
against disease and pests.
He said that Ali Akbar Group would also become the
first private sector firm to develop a variety of
wheat in a couple of years.
