Nazims to help control pesticides adulteration

ISLAMABAD (April 28 2004): District nazims will be given an important role to control pesticides adulteration and take necessary action against adulterators.

"Nazims role is very important in controlling adulteration and implement the existing laws in letter and spirit," said Chairman National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB), Daniyal Aziz on Tuesday.

Talking to APP, the Chairman NRB said that cabinet had decided to involve nazims to check adulteration trends and curbing the menace of pesticides adulteration.

"We are going for a consultation to prepare recommendations for the cabinet after a thorough debate on the issue with the participation of all stakeholders," Daniyal said.

NRB is organising a one-day seminar on "Enforcement Mechanism for Effectively Curbing the Menace of Adulteration in Pesticides and Role of District Governments."

The seminar will focus on defining the future role of nazims in this area and empower them to take essential measures for providing better quality pesticides to farmers.

"A comprehensive strategy will be worked out to streamline the provision of quality pesticides," Daniyal said, adding that serious complaints against adulteration were received from 25 districts.

After the winding up of magistracy system at district level, the bureaucracy had been apologetic to take action saying they had not powers to take action under the new local government system.

The matter was brought to the cabinet and it was decided to fully involve the nazims to investigate and initiate action against those violating the law, he said.

About expected measures, Daniyal said that a mechanism would be developed where the nazims would implement the law and cases would be prepared against the violators to present them before the courts.

At the same time, he said, it would also be ensured to expedite litigation process against the adulterators and look into possibility of imposing fines and award imprisonment under the law.
