Meeting to discuss wheat crisis on April 26
KARACHI (April 26
2004): A meeting has been convened at Islamabad on
Monday, April 26, to discuss the prevailing wheat
crisis and find some permanent solution to solve
the shortage of the commodity being faced by the
country.
Food ministers and secretaries of all four
provinces are expected to attend the meeting. A
comprehensive working paper has been prepared by
Sindh government which will be presented in the
meeting.
Sources said that main items on the agenda include
ban on movement of wheat on inter-provincial
basis, procurement of the commodity by government,
and financial facilities provided by commercial
banks to private parties for the purchase of
wheat.
The meeting is expected to decide whether
inter-provincial movement of the commodity should
continue or not.
The Sindh government will apprise the Federal
government that procurement price fixed by the
provincial government is Rs 350 for 40 kg. Against
this, the private parties are providing the price
to the growers which ranges between Rs 400 and Rs
450 for 40 kg.
The Federal Government will be asked to restrict
overdraft (OD) facilities provided by banks to
private parties on soft terms.
The Islamabad meeting will determine the estimate
of production and see what quantity will be
required to be imported.
The need of the Sindh government is stated to be
1.2 million tons. But the stock at present is
about 0.2 million tons. The remaining stock is
lying with private parties.
Official sources said that ban on the movement of
wheat should continue. But the final decision will
