QUETTA (April 07 2004): The Balochistan agriculture scene will undergo a welcome change when the Kachhi Canal project is completed in the next three years at a cost of over Rs 31 billion.

Under this project over 0.7 million acres of land will be provided with irrigation water in the areas of Naseerabad, Jaffarabad and Bolan districts. This project will result in an increase in cultivated area and orchard land in the three districts.

The funds for the canal project are being provided by the federal government.

It is a major project in Balochistan in the field of irrigation water. The Mirani Dam in Kech district and the Subakzai Dam in Zhon district, costing a sum of over one billion and six billion rupees, respectively, will also bring about a favourable change in the standard of living of the people in these two districts.

Some 22 bulldozers are also being acquired for the project from the special grant given by the Peoples Republic of China for the province.
