Government urged to frame farmer-friendly
policies
ISLAMABAD (April 18
2004): Senator Sanaullah Baloch has expressed the
need for giving farmers their due rights to
develop the agriculture sector.
He was speaking at a seminar on "International Day
of Farmers' Struggle", organised by Sustainable
Agriculture Action Group (SAAG) here on Saturday.
Baloch said that the government should formulate
policies in favour of the farmers so that they
could benefit from them.
He said: "Poverty is more prevalent in the rural
areas and so they need more attention." He was of
the view that the farmers should unite and project
the problems faced by them.
The purpose of celebrating April 17 as an
International Day of Farmers' Struggle is to
highlight the relentless efforts of farmers to
ensure food security in the world and the miseries
they are facing.
The farmers from various provinces of the country
discussed the problems being faced by them and how
small farmers are facing the problems for sowing,
growing and selling their crops.
The farmers in the world are also commemorating
the International Day of Farmers' Struggle to
highlight the deaths of 19 farmers who were
massacred during a movement in Brazil.
The speakers also mentioned the neo liberal
policies of the World Trade Organisation (WTO)
regime and IFIs imposed agenda for poor countries,
which is ultimately having the trickle down
effects on their lives and increasing poverty in
the rural areas.
They said that these organisations are promoting
the corporate agenda of the Multinational
Corporations (MNCs), the profit mongers.
FARMER'S SACRIFICE: SAAG has dedicated this day to
commemorate the sacrifice of Korean farmer Lee
Kyung Hae, who committed suicide while advocating
the problems of millions of small farmers at the
5th WTO ministerial conference in Cancun in
September 2003.
The speakers said that Lee sacrificed his life for
the rights of the billion of poor farmers of the
world.
They said that the farmers should come together
and promote his cause and resist against the
policies of the "International Economic Policy".
