Government to assist farmers for better farm
yield: Rind
ISLAMABAD (March 31 2004): The Federal Minister
for Food & Agriculture, Sardar Yar Mohammad Rind,
has said that government is determined to help
farming community particularly small farmers
because they are the backbone of country's economy
as 40 percent of our exports depend on
agriculture.
He was speaking as chief guest in a field day
organised by Crop Maximisation Project at Union
Council 45-SB District Sargodha on Tuesday.
He said that the government is determined to leave
no stone unturned in uplifting the lot of farmers
and to boost per acre yield not only to attain
self-sufficiency but also to export maximum of our
agriculture produce.
The Food Security Project was piloted with the
financial and technical assistance of FAO of the
United Nation from 1999 to 2001. After having
encouraging results, the project was replicated in
109 villages of 15 districts in all provinces and
AJK at the cost of Rs 500 million.
The project is focusing on the development of
small farmers with the aim to enhance their crop
productivity and income, he said adding, it is a
complete participatory approach where farmers are
sharing cost of the project to the tune of 100
percent for inputs and 50 percent for farm
implements and income diversification
interventions, including dairy farming, goat
farming, fish farming, honeybee farming, off
season vegetable production and milk collection
and chilling.
The federal food minister appreciated the spirit
of participation of farmers and cost sharing in
various project interventions. He also appreciated
the efforts of village organisation for
establishing an agri-mall from where they would be
supplied the good quality seed, fertiliser.
