Ginners refuse to buy early variety of cotton
MULTAN (April 10 2004): Announcing that the
ginning factories in Punjab would start
functioning from October 1 next, the Pakistan
Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) declared not to
purchase the early variety of cotton because it
does not meet the international standards.
"We have unanimously decided to run our factories
from October Ist every year and would not
encourage the early variety of cotton nor we would
purchase this variety in any case to maintain the
standards and qualities," said Mian Abdul Waheed
Sajjad Vice Chairman of PCGA while talking to PPI
here on Friday.
He said that government should implement its
cotton policy in letter and spirit through
Agriculture department and not to allow anyone to
sow early variety of cotton which would create
trouble for other crops.
He said that early variety would escape from pest
attacks but it would damage the major crop.
He said that Pakistan is known as a good quality
producer of cotton and we should not lose this
credibility for a minor benefit and instead should
endeavour to maintain this repute by producing
contamination-free cotton to attain monopoly in
the cotton world.
President of Anjuman Kashtkaran Punjab Abdul Ali
Zakir Usmani however refuted the claim of PCGA
that early variety cannot maintain the standard
and quality. He said that early variety of cotton
needs no spray of pesticides and would be
contamination-free and able to compete the world
standards.
