FPCCI calls for abolishing ST on sugar
KARACHI, April 16: The
Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and
Industry’s standing committee on sugar has
demanded of the government to abolish the sales
tax on sugar. Sugar is the only food item on which
sales tax has been levied by the government.
A press release issued by the FPCCI said here
Thursday that the demand was made in a meeting of
the committee, held with Amanullah Farooq,
chairman, in the chair, and attended by
representatives of sugar mills, office-bearers of
the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA), Sindh
zone, and members of the FPCCI managing committee.
The meeting noted that an estimated over one
million tonnes of sugar would be surplus this
year, and urged the government to facilitate its
export or purchase the surplus stock, the release
said. Mr Farooq said that all major sugar
producing countries such as USA, European Union,
Brazil, Cuba etc were subsidising their exports
but Pakistan was not supporting sugar export.
