Flourmills allowed to buy wheat from open
market
LAHORE (April 28
2004): With a view to checking the rising wheat
flour prices, Punjab government has decided to
allow the flourmills to purchase wheat in limited
quantity from open market of their respective
defunct divisions.
Director Food Punjab Jawaid Rafique Malik told
Business Recorder that a delegation of All
Pakistan Flourmills Association (PFMA) called on
the Punjab Food Minister Ch. Muhammad Iqbal here
on Tuesday. The situation emerging out due to
increase in flour prices was discussed in detail.
The government, while accepting the demands of the
PFMA has allowed the flourmills to purchase wheat
in limited quantity from open market of their
respective defunct divisions. After purchase of
wheat by mills, prices of 20-kg wheat flour bag,
which have risen to Rs 216 would start decreasing.
When contacted Liaquat Ali Khan, Chairman PFMA
Punjab said that the government has given
assurance that no government agency would create
any hurdle in PFMA's wheat purchase operation.
He said decline in wheat flour prices would be
possible subject to implementation of decisions
taken in Tuesday's meeting.
Majid Chaudhry former vice-chairman of PFMA Punjab
said that the government was not providing wheat
to flourmills on subsidised rates hence it has no
right to regulate wheat flour prices.
Since the arrival wheat crop, government has not
only stopped issuance of wheat quota to mills but
also imposed various restrictions on wheat
purchase.
This led to increase in wheat prices from Rs 350
per maund to Rs 380 per maund.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Flourmills Association (PFMA)
Punjab has warned the government that flourmills
of Punjab would observe strike, if restrictions
imposed on wheat procurement by flourmills of
Sindh were not lifted.
In a press statement issued here on Tuesday,
Chairman PFMA Punjab, Liaquat Ali Khan said that
Sindh Food Department was creating hurdles in
wheat procurement operation of Sindh flourmills.
Another press release issued by PFMA Punjab said
that Punjab government in consultation with the
PFMA was going to take action against the wheat
hoarders in the province.
