Flour prices go up by Rs 2 per kg in Peshawar
PESHAWAR (April 30
2004): The prices of flour went up by Rs 2 per
kilogram in Peshawar, as the Punjab government
continues ban on the inter-district transportation
of the wheat.
Atta dealers in the atta market at New Rampura
Gate, told Business Recorder on Wednesday.
According to the dealers, the 20-kilogram bag of
the flour, which was available at Rs 195 to 200,
was now sold at Rs 230 to 240.
They said that due to the ban, price of the wheat
had also increased, and added, before ban
100-kilogram bag of the wheat was available at Rs
900, but now its price had been raised to Rs 1050
per bag, which was even now not available.
Talking to the Business Recorder, an atta dealer
at New Rampura Market, Muhammad Asif Sethi said
the ban imposed by the Punjab government had
pushed both dealers and flour millers into crisis.
He termed the ban unjustified and uncalled for,
saying that Punjab was hatching conspiracy to
defame the provincial government in the Frontier
province.
He said that the stubbornness of Punjab, regarding
not vacating of ban on the wheat transportation,
would plunge the NWFP into worst kind of flour
crisis.
He was of the view that if the circumstances
remained the same, then the prices of the flour
would witness remarkable increase, and the
20-kilogram bag of the flour would be even not
available at Rs 300.
Sethi appreciated the efforts of the NWFP minister
for food, Fazal Rabbani, and expressed the hope
that it would be fruitful.
He said that for first time NWFP had taken bold
stand of threatening to stop power supply to
Punjab over the matter.
