Flour Mills Association calls off strike
KARACHI (April 29
2004): The Flour Mills Association on Wednesday
called off strike after a meeting with Sindh Food
Minister Arif Mustafa Jatoi and Chief Secretary Dr
Mutawakkal Kazi following assurance from Arif
Jatoi of giving due consideration to their
demands, removing of seals of seven flour mills
and withdrawal of show-cause notices.
A delegation of the association led by Haji Munir
Ahmed Memon, met the food minister and chief
secretary and conveyed their certain apprehensions
with reference to ongoing wheat crises in Sindh
and requested for lifting of section 144 on the
inter-district movement of wheat.
The chief secretary stressed on maintaining the
supremacy of law and complete reconciliation
between all stakeholders so as to save the
consumers from difficulties and said that it
should be the goal of everyone to ensure supply of
quality wheat flour to consumers in all cities and
interior of Sindh at proper price.
The food minister informed the delegation that a
meeting of food ministers of all the provinces is
being held in Islamabad on April 30 and on the
occasion he will also take up the issue of section
144.
Additional chief secretary home informed that
section 144 is a law, which is enforced as per
law.
The secretary food informed that government is
aware of the problems of all stakeholders and
therefore, the process of co-ordination and
liaison with them is going on and all possible
steps would be taken for solution of their
problems.
Winding up the discussion, the chief secretary
made it clear that government doesn't want to
curtail the profit of mill owners and we have to
look at the factors responsible for causing
inconveniences to consumers.
He said that Sindh government is maintaining
continuous contact with the center as well and
federal minister and secretary food have assured
of resolving the issues.
