Floriculture has great potential for export
ISLAMABAD (April 30
2004): The field of floriculture has great
potential to grow faster as a sub-sector of
agriculture, particularly in terms of the export.
According to the official source on Thursday,
availability of the diverse agro-climatic
conditions in Pakistan are best suited for the
production of almost all kinds of floricultural
crop, like cut flowers, pot plants, annuals,
biennials, perennial, trees and shrubs.
Our country is rich in resources, and has got
favourable climate conditions, which are very
helpful for raising cut flower.
This is possible by developing specialised crops
production zones equipped with latest technology
for the production.
In Pakistan most of the flowers are produced in
winter, when Europe sinks in snow, and most of the
traditional functions are held during that period.
However, farmers should be encouraged to grow
floricultural crops or at least they should
allocate some area of their farms to these crops.
Many side businesses could also be developed
including pots, flower-holding materials (baskets,
vases, and chemicals etc) wrapping materials for
cut flowers, fertilisers, garden tools and
implements, etc.
All this is expected to raise the income of
flowers by export and by fulfilling the local
demands.
Pakistan can earn its foreign exchange in billion
US dollars like the countries Sri Lanka, Iran,
India, Kenya, Singapore, Thai Land etc.
However, the growers are hampered by certain
problems such as low productivity inconsistent
quality, poor handling, improper grading and
packaging, lack of cold chain facilities, pests
and disease, high post harvest losses and
inadequate transport facilities.
Clearly better strategies and measures were needed
to be taken up by the government to tackle these
problems, sources said.
