Fishermen to apprise Sindh chief minister about
harmful nets
KARACHI (April 06 2004): Fishermen community in
its efforts to eliminate destructive nets will
meet Sindh Chief Minister Sardar Ali Mohammad Khan
Mahar on Tuesday to inform him about the losses
incurred by fishermen community due to use of
these nets by deep sea fishing trawlers.
According to statement of Pakistan Fishermen Folk
(PFF) issued here on Monday, Mohammed Ali Shah,
chairman of the PFF will lead the delegation to
draw the attention of the chief minister towards
the problems of fishermen community and would seek
a strict action against the destructive nets which
have played havoc with the traditional fishermen
living at 350 km long Sindh Coast.
It mentions that the harmful fishing gears, tidal
trap net, wire net and bottom trawl net locally
called Bhoolo, Qatro and Gujjo are
indiscriminately used in mangroves areas and the
creeks of Sindh coast from Karachi to Keti Bunder.
"These nets have detrimental impacts on fisheries
and cause growth over fishing due to the minute
size of the holes, which trap sub adults and
juvenile forms disturbing the maturing cycle of
the fish and shrimps.
Apart from this the Bhoolo net also creates
pollution in the coastal waters of Sindh," it
observes.
