FAP flays ban on wheat movement

LAHORE (April 23 2004): Farmers Associates of Pakistan (FAP), while flaying the ban on wheat movement, has said that the provincial government's decision was contrary to its policy as well as of the concept of free trade policy.

"The government instead of imposing ban should have offered incentives to the growers on inputs, subsidy on flour and enhanced wheat support price every year at least five percent besides making efforts to increase per acre yield."

FAP chief co-ordinator, Muhammad Idrees stated this while talking to newsman here on Thursday.

He said the government banned wheat movement due to less yield of wheat compared to the last year and more price being offered to the growers by the private sector.

While lauding the government step of announcing the transportation chances, he however suggested to take necessary measures for enhancing the crop output, ie provision of quality seed, early sowing of the crop, announcement of support price of Rs 400/40kg by September.

According to Pakistan Flour Mills Association (PFMA) advisor Bilal Aslam Soofi, the country would face a serious crisis of flour shortage due to increasing demand, ie up to 27 million metric ton by year 2007.

He lamented that wheat yield was decreasing, while the population was increasing.

"It would be wise to shower some incentives to the growers, millers and market forces instead of importing costly wheat from abroad and fetch the local needs," he opined.
