Dairy Seminar in Peshawar
April 30: One day
seminar on "Prospects of Dairy Industry in NWFP"
was held in Livestock and Dairy Development
Directorate NWFP on 29-4-2004. The seminar was
attended by Directors L&DD, Director VRI,
representatives of the Administrative and P&D
Departments, senior and head quarter officers of
the livestock department, progressive dairy
farmers and representatives of United Bank
Limited.
First session of the seminar started at 1000
hours. Dr.Amanullah conducted proceedings of the
seminar and invited Dr.Zahoor AD HQ to welcome the
guests. Then Director LD&D Dr.Muqarab Ali Khan
presented objectives of the seminar and reviewed
status of the work load to attend the provincial
population of 15 million ruminants in addition to
rural and commercial poultry. He told that
Pakistan has become 5th largest milk producer in
the world and urged the departmental officers to
work hard so that the livestock sector could play
its due role in the national economy. He reviewed
the status of developmental projects on breed
improvement and development of peri-urban dairy
buffaloes farms.
Then Dr.M.Subhan Qureshi highlighted the prospects
of dairy industry in the province. He told that
although the country has become fifth largest milk
producer; we can not find a glass of milk free of
chemical and biological contamination; the country
lack any significant position in export and the
dairy farmers can not generate sufficient income
to support a comfortable and respectable living.
He analyzed the technical, financial and marketing
issues faced by the dairy industry and proposed a
package to handle these issues through an
integrated approach. A commercialization unit
supporting a provincial dairy board with
sufficient administrative autonomy and financial
resources was proposed.
Mr.Naeem Bangash, Regional Coordinator United Bank
Limited presented the various packages available
for supported livestock related activities like
dairy, sheep, goats and poultry farming, slaughter
business, feed manufacturing establishment of
veterinary and artificial insemination clinics,
etc. He assured the meeting for his support in
getting the loans after proper feasibility,
scrutinization and recommendation by the livestock
department.
Concluding session of the seminar was chaired by
Mr.Ahad Qureshi, Additional Secretary,
Agriculture, Livestock and Cooperatives
Department, Government of NWFP. Mr.Qureshi showed
his concern that at international level the status
of Pakistani Agriculture including livestock is
not appreciable. We must work hard to improve the
quality of our work and compete with the world. He
conveyed the vision of the Senior Minister
Mr.Sirajul Haq that future of the country's
economy lies in development of agriculture and
livestock. He appreciated the projects submitted
by the department and committed to support them at
higher level. At the end Director L&DD thanked all
the participants and concuded the seminar.
At the evening a farewell party was arranged in
the honor of Dr.Abdul Waheed Director AHITI who
was going on retirement. The party was attended by
Mr.Ahad Qureshi, Additional Secretary Agriculture,
Director L&DD Dr.Muqarab, Director VRI
Dr.Saadullah Jan, Retired Director Dr.Ajmal,
Dr.Fazal Din Khattak and headquarters/field
officers.
