Cotton sowing in south Punjab from May 1
LAHORE (April 22
2004): The cultivation of cotton crop will begin
in southern Punjab from May 1, with sowing already
started in non-traditional areas of Faisalabad,
Toba Tek Singh and Sahiwal.
According to Agriculture department sources, the
cotton varieties recommended for cultivation this
year include-CIM-446, CIM-473, CIM-499, NIAB-999,
FH-1000, FH-900, FH-901 and the first ever cotton
variety developed by the private sector, Al-Seemi
H-151.Meanwhile, a private firm, presently dealing
in agro-chemicals formulation, will introduce a
high-yielding and disease-resistant cotton variety
for commercial sowing by the year 2006.
"We have developed a strain that is a blend of
Egyptian, Pakistani and Chinese lines," Dr Khalid
Hameed, Business Manager of Ali Akbar Group told
APP.
This will be the second variety of cotton crop
ever developed in the private sector in Pakistan
after Al-Seemi H-151 released by Siddiq-e-Akbar
Bukhari farm.
Dr Khalid Hameed said that research was also under
way to develop Bt Cotton, a transgenic variety
with in-built resistance against disease and
pests.
He claimed that the group would also become the
first private sector firm to develop a new wheat
variety within a couple of years.
