City District Government rejects proposal to
categorise meat
LAHORE,April 18: The
City District Government (CDG) has rejected the
proposal of Livestock Department to issue separate
licences to butchers interested in selling 'A'
category and 'low' quality mutton in the
provincial metropolis.
The decision was taken in the District Price
Control Committee meeting chaired by the District
Coordination Officer (DCO) Khalid Sultan. The
meeting was also participated by the District
Officer (DO) Livestock, DO Industries, Town
Municipal Officers (TMOs) of Allama Iqbal and
Nishtar Town and representatives of butchers
association.
Livestock Department had proposed the CDG to issue
around fifty A category licenses to butchers for
selling meat of healthy he goats weighting 10 to
15 kilograms at the rate of Rs 150 per kg. The
department had also set certain conditions that
for obtaining A category license the butchers have
to maintain proper cleanliness and freezing
arrangements at their shops. The department also
proposed separate stamps for A category and B
category cattleheads at the slaughterhouse.
It was proposed that those butchers having
licences other than A category, could sell low
quality mutton (of elderly cattleheads) at Rs 130
per kg. They could even sell meat of she goats and
rams. District Price Control Committee disagreed
with the proposal forwarded by the Livestock
Department on the grounds that it would be
difficult for the consumers to differentiate
between the A category and B category mutton.
Moreover, the CDG would face hardships in ensuring
the implementation of set rules and regulations.
