Chakki owners threaten lockout, strike against
wheat seizure: 60 truckloads confiscated by food
department
HYDERABAD (April 19
2004): Atta Chakki Owners Association has
threatened to declare lockout in their grinding
units, or resort to strike if the Food Department
continues to confiscate wheat purchased by them
from interior Sindh to run their units and supply
wheat flour to consumers.
President of Association, Nawab Ali, told newsmen
that the Food Department has adopted a novel
method of meeting its procurement target by
confiscating the wheat of chakki owners in
violation of federal cabinet decision under which
there is no restriction on wheat movement.
He said that under food laws the food department
is not entitled to restrict wheat movement or
confiscate wheat purchased from open market.
He said that the deputy director food and district
food controller have enforced 'jungle law' in
Hyderabad as they are confiscating wheat of
grinding units to complete their wheat procurement
target.
He expressed fear that if the food department
failed to purchase wheat directly from the growers
it would not be able to meet its procurement
target which would create acute shortage of wheat
flour in Sindh Urban areas.
Nawab alleged that so far the Hyderabad food
department has confiscated 60 truckloads wheat of
chakki owners, and added that the department has
resorted to 'Naka Bandi' of Hyderabad although
there is no ban on movement of wheat
He demanded of the provincial secretary, food, to
concentrate on the purchase centres and direct the
officials, who are sitting in their homes, to go
out in the interior for purchasing wheat.
He warned that if harassment of chakki owners was
not stopped, they would be forced to declare
lockout or resort to strike.
