All help offered to Malaysian team for growing oil palm

KARACHI (April 13 2004): Malaysia has shown interest in oil palm cultivation in the coastal areas of Sindh for which the provincial government has agreed to provide necessary help, including land.

A delegation of Malaysian exporters and agriculturists, led by Fauzy Asrafudeen Sayed Mohamed, director of marketing, Malaysian Palm Oil Promotion Council, called on Sindh Agriculture Minister Arif Mustafa Jatoi at latter's office on Monday and discussed plan for investment in oil palm cultivation in Pakistan.

Other members of the delegation were Faisal Iqbal, Kaukab Iqbal, Prashand Nair, Dr C S Koh, Yong Cho Jau, Mohammad Salman Omaer, Fatimah Zaharah MD Nan.

The delegation said that it had found coastal area most suitable for palm plantation.

It said that a team of the Malaysian palm plantation had visited Pakistan eight years ago to examine the soil for cultivation of palm. This team concluded that the coastal area of Sindh was the most appropriate location for palm cultivation.

Faisal Iqbal, regional manager of Malaysian Palm Oil Promotion Council, said that palm had already been cultivated on 1200 acres in Thatta, and Badin, and plantation on 5000 acres was in progress with the collaboration of government and private sector.

Faudzy Mohamed said that the Malaysian Government has already undertaken the cultivation of palm in Indonesia and would now try to do it in Sindh.

The palm plantation requires comparatively less water; therefore it will suit Sindh considering the limited water availability.

Farmers and growers can earn up to Rs 100,000 per acre by virtue of cultivation of palm, and its crop matures in four years.

Arif Mustafa said that the government was interested in introducing palm in Sindh and would provide all assistance, including land, for its cultivation.

He said that the government was interested in developing the edible oil refining industry.
