0.9 million tons wheat procured in Punjab
ISLAMABAD (April 27
2004): Punjab Food and Agriculture Minister
Mohammad Iqbal on Monday said that provincial food
department has acquired 600,000 tons whereas
300,000 tons wheat has been acquired by the Passco
to-date.
Both departments are acquiring wheat to meet
demands of the country. Passco is carrying out
procurement operation in 13 Punjab Tehsils and one
district (Hafizabad), he told PTV.
"The crisis of Atta will be avoided at all costs.
There is no restriction on byproducts of wheat
like atta etc," he added.
The ban has been imposed on inter-provincial
movement of wheat by Punjab to ensure food
security and maintain sufficient wheat stocks to
fulfil the country's needs.
He said that movement of wheat has been restricted
as ad hoc arrangement to avoid repercussions of
hoarding. The main aim of the ban is to facilitate
provinces and fulfil wheat demands.
The people could not be left at the mercy of
hoarders, currently on buying spree at higher
rates with nefarious intentions, he added.
The Punjab government was competing with the
private buyers. The ban was imposed to ensure
achieving required sufficient reserves level for
the whole country, he said.
