Pakistan becomes fifth largest milk producer in
world
LAHORE (February 23
2004): Pakistan has become the fifth largest milk
producer in the world with a total production of
27.8 billion litres annually.
Dean, Faculty of Animal Production, University of
Veterinary and Animal Sciences Professor Dr Talat
Naseer Pasha told APP here on Sunday that "Milk
made it the largest valued agricultural produce of
the country." He said buffalo and cattle
population in Pakistan now stands at 51.7 million.
Pasha said low per animal milk yield is adversely
affecting commercial dairy farming in Pakistan
because balanced feed is not given to animals
which affects their growth and results in low
yield.
He further explained with audio visual aids that
increased milk productivity always depends upon
the availability of a balanced feed to all animal
species.
Dr Talat said that the cost of feed, in terms of
the percentage of total production expenditure on
dairy farming, accounts for about 60 percent. He
said according to recent estimates, Pakistan is
deficient by 40 to 80 percent in forage and
concentrate feed.
Dean said to enhance per animal productivity, it
is imperative to utilise the existing feed
resources efficiently.
He said that future prospects of dairy production
in Pakistan demand solid steps aimed at enhancing
milk yield for export sake, after ensuring
balanced feed for milchers.
