Sindh government to ensure supply of quality flour
KARACHI (February 19 2004): In order to overcome
the present flour/wheat crisis in the city, the
Sindh government, in collaboration with City
District Government Karachi (CDGK), has decided to
ensure adequate supply of quality flour at
reasonable prices to the retail shops and Bachat
Bazars.
According to the decision taken by the Provincial
Food Secretary, Mir Mohammad Paryar, at all the
187 Bachat Bazars of the city, good quality flour
would be sold at controlled rate of Rs 11.50 per
kg, while at ordinary retail stores it would be
available at Rs 12 per kg.
The secretary took the decision in a meeting with
the EDO, Investment Promotion Department, Raees
Ahmed Paracha on Wednesday.
The secretary observed that the inflated prices of
flour could not be checked in the city without the
participation of CDGK.
He directed the CDGK officers to register cases
against those retailers who are fleecing the
consumers by charging higher than the prescribed
rates so that strict legal action could be taken
against such elements.
He remarked that there was a large number of
people including the town and UC Nazims who could
effectively monitor the prices in their respective
areas.
The flour mill owners who were also present in the
meeting assured the secretary and the EDO that
they would try their best to provide quality flour
at recommended rates to the retail shops, besides
holding stalls in Bachat Bazars. The EDO, Raees
Paracha was nominated as the head of the price
monitoring committee.
Other officials of CDGK and Sindh Government also
attended the meeting.
