| Proposals to develop sugarcane sector LAHORE (February 11 2004): Sugarcane Growers Association of Mamoo Kanjan and a team of consultants have said to have evolved a new system under which both small growers and sugar producers can benefit and prosper.
Javed Malik, convenor of the association, in a statement issued here on Tuesday maintained that the new system would give sugarcane growers of the area part ownership in the sugar manufacturing process, and provide them with the latest agri technology to help increase the per acre yield as well as improve the quality of their produce.
He said the project has been conceived under a social entrepreneurship approach, to complement the government plan to reduce poverty, develop small and medium enterprise, create more jobs in rural areas, and distribute wealth at the grass root level in Pakistan.
The sugarcane growers representative said that the programme will make extensive use of Information Technology, and will also help increase government revenues through a broader tax base.
He claimed that the 'Mamoo Kanjan Plan' was a package to benefit all stakeholders in this sector, and urged the government to implement it at the earliest.
