| New agriculture uplift plan in the offing FAISALABAD (February 10 2004): A medium-term national agricultural uplift plan worth Rs 116.2 billion is in the offing that will enhance the existing storage capacity of the country by 5.6 MAF of water.
It will bring 1.9 million acres of land under cultivation and thousands of jobs will be created during construction of these schemes besides generating 332 MW of power.
Modernisation of canals is also part of the plan which includes lining 7308 Km of canals and rehabilitation of six barrages (Jinnah, Taunsa, Khanki, Sulmnki, Balloki and Islam).
The objectives of these projects are the development of land and water resources to increase agricultural production. Hydropower policy was revised to allow the private sector entry.
