K-3 water project enabled provision of 5,000 jobs
KARACHI (November 17 2003): Nazim Karachi, Naimatullah Khan has said that K-3 project for 100 MGD additional water for Karachi has enabled the provision of jobs to some 5000 persons while another 32,000 were earning their livelihood because of construction of Northern Bypass and Lyari Expressway projects.
He stated this while speaking on the occasion of distribution of ration and sewing machines among widows and "mustahqeens" of Khamiso village under the auspices of Haji Ibrahim and Khamiso Brohi Village Welfare Society.
On the occasion ration and sewing machines were distributed among 300 deserving persons and widows.
Naimatullah Khan said lacs of people will have employment opportunities when work will start on Karachi Mass Transit Programme, circular railway and an increase in the number of green buses.
"It is our all out endeavour that unemployment is eliminated from Karachi or it is significantly reduced," the City Nazim declared.
He pointed out that population explosion in Karachi is a major cause of unemployment.
The population growth rate in Pakistan is 3 percent but it is 6 percent in Karachi because people from whole of Pakistan comes to this city in search of job.
Naimatullah informed that some 6 million people living in 538 Katchi Abadis here are living a life below poverty line. He said Karachi is not the name of Defence Society and Clifton alone.
He said that leaders of Khamiso Goth are rendering service to humanity for the last 4 years and distributing various items of daily use among widows, poor and deserving persons with the co-operation of philanthropists which is a best worship.
Pointing out that a similar function was also organised in Gulberg Town, the City Nazim said if philanthropists of other areas would follow the same suit, then it is bound 4.o contain poverty and unemployment.
He said President of Pakistan has taken personal interest in the development and progress of Karachi and brought all the stake holders at one platform and also approved a Rs 29 billion package for the city.
He assured that this amount will be spent with the consultation of Town and UC Nazims.
"We are determined to make Karachi a model city and will certainly succeed in our mission." He told the gathering that each UC has been given Rs 6.4 million for carrying out development works in their respective areas and UC-9 is one of them.
He declared that Rs 5 million fund given to Member National Assembly, Aisha Munawar will be spent on supply of gas to this area.
Naimatullah Khan said that Sindh Chief Minister had promised that Sindh Katchi Abadi Authority (SKAA) will be devolved into the City Government in a week, but the promise remained unfulfilled even after passage of one month.
He said non-implementation of Chief Minister's directive has affected his position and he would appeal to him to ensure an inquiry into the matter.
City Nazim said that only after devolution of this Authority to City Government, the residents of these Abadis could get proprietary rights.
He told them to identify the plot for construction of primary school and dispensary and City Government will extend help in this regard.
Earlier Nazim North Karachi Town, Shafiqur Rehman Usmani said that in view of inconvenience being faced by inhabitants of Khamiso Goth, a 24- inch dia sewerage line was laid at a cost of Rs 6.8 million while efforts are being made to overcome water shortage.
He informed that two more roads Road-6000 and Road-4000 of the area have been included in the Karachi package and their construction will provide better communication facility.
