Agri. sector recorded negative growth of 2.5 percent in 2000-01 
The agriculture sector could not achieve even the low target of 2.6 percent in financial year 2000-01. On the contrary, it recorded a negative growth of 2.5 percent. This situation occurred on account of the shortage of irrigation water that persisted both in Kharif and Rabi seasons. Along with the losses in major crops, the performance of fisheries also remained subdued due to the low water levels in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and dams, reveals a study.

No subsidy on agricultural items except wheat, cotton
The Federal Government has decided not to give any subsidy on any agricultural item, except wheat and cotton. A number of agricultural trade bodies had demanded subsidy and support price on agricultural produce but the government is reported to have turned down this demand on the plea that the system of subsidy and support price has been done away with on the advice of the IMF and World Bank. The government is unable to ignore the advice of these organisations, it is reported.

Punjab announces wheat release policy for flour mills
