Footwear to get full protection under WTO laws: Commerce Minister
ISLAMABAD (August 28 2002) : Footwear Industry of Pakistan will be provided full protection against under-invoicing, dumping and provision of subsidies
under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Laws. These laws provide seeking relief
for the domestic industry under counter-veiling, anti-dumping, and safeguard
laws.
These views were expressed by Abdul Razak Dawood, Federal Minister for Commerce,
Industries and Production, in a meeting with Footwear Industry peoples, here on
Tuesday.
Dawood said that his Ministry is closely monitoring the import pattern of all
the industries and whenever it is felt that some surge is taking place to cause
serious injury to any domestic industry, it will follow all legal courses
available under WTO conventions.
He further said that domestic industry has to be provided protection at all
costs and steps undertaken to further strengthen it. On the complaint of Paper
and Electronic Industries, which are also facing similar uneven challenges from
the international market, the minister advised them to prepare their cases for
relief under WTO with full documented evidence. He directed the National Tariff
Commission (NTC) to process their cases after having properly vetted.
