Dr. Manzoor posted envoy to WTO Geneva

ISLAMABAD (August 22 2002) : Dr Manzoor Ahmed, a BS-21 officer of the
Secretariat Group, at present, Member (Customs) in the Central Board of Revenue,
has been posted as Pakistan's Ambassador to the WTO, Geneva.

Dr Manzoor has extensive experience of tariff and trade matters. He has
previously worked in a senior position in the World Customs Organisation,
Brussels, for 10 years from 1986 to 1996. During his posting there, he travelled
extensively to various countries, including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Iran,
Mongolia, Turkey, Iran, India, Nepal, Uganda, Tanzania, to provide technical
assistance regarding tariff issues.

Since his return to Pakistan in 1996, he has been representing the government of
Pakistan in its bilateral and multilateral trade negotiations.

Dr Manzoor led the Pakistani team to Saarc and ECO negotiations and the recent
trade negotiations with Sri Lanka which resulted in signing of a free trade area
agreement.

He has been actively involved in the working of the World Trade Organisation. He
frequently represented the WCO at the WTO meetings during the Uruguay Round
negotiations, and is also the current chairman of the WTO Task Force on Market
Access and Trims, set up by the commerce ministry, Dr Manzoor has also been a
visiting lecturer on WTO issues to various forums, including Nipa training
institutes. He has good knowledge of French.
