2 Pakistani
mangoes exhibitions in Russia, China, Iran in July

MULTAN: Pakistan horticulture development and export board and
mango growers have unanimously decided for holding of two
overseas mango exhibitions in mid July, exporters, growers’
joint meeting in the first week of May to ensure mango export
at wide range to capture world over markets.
At
least five countries are hot favorite for Pakistani mango
include China, Korea, Iran, India and South Africa and
capturing of markets of these countries was stressed by the
growers. The joint meeting has also decided for establishment
of an export house in Multan in the next year and three
irradiation plants in Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar, however
proposals would be submitted during the current year to
provide complete infrastructure of grading, vexing, and cold
chain to ensure preservation of king of fruits.
The PHDEB chief executive Shamoon Sadiq chaired the meeting
while mango growers association president Syed Zahid Gardezi
conducted the proceedings here on Wednesday. Three countries
were discussed for overseas mango exhibitions include Russia,
China and Iran which countries especially China are thickly
populated and seeking the taste of mango. The exhibitions
would be held in mid of July following the harvest of hot
demand mango varieties.
The
PHDEB would arrange exporters’ meeting with mango growers in
the first 10 days of May, however, the role of arthis or
middlemen was criticized. Talking to this scribe at the
conclusion of meeting the PHDEB chief executive Shamoon Sadiq
said that primary objective of Board is to address and resolve
problems and issues of Pakistan horticulture sector through
long term and timely interventions aimed at improving quality
at key areas of the horticulture value chain, ultimately
leading to a substantial increase in export from Pakistan.
As the mango season has begun, the PHDEB has concentrated all
thoughts towards strengthening and boosting up the mango
infrastructure by introducing pre-harvest, post harvest,
packaging and infrastructure development technologies.
Shamoon said good agriculture practices are being introduced
to cater with WTO requirements in the future survival. At
least eight orchards have been selected in this connection and
out put would be gauged in the next year. He said the drip
irrigation is being introduced in horticulture, as a step of
pre-harvest planning.
The
packaging, grading system is being strengthened in connection
with post harvest techniques and Rawalpindi based CABI
bioscience, which is working for integrated pest management
would provide assistance in this regard.Shamoon said in fact
mango is most perishable fruit that needs special preservation
and care and the entire infrastructure is being developed to
attain the required results.
The establishment of full fledge export house equipped with
grading, vexing and cold storage facilities is being initiated
that would be a joint venture of Punjab government, PHDEB and
private sector. The Punjab government would provide land for
export house, the PHDEB provide funds from Export Development
Fund and assistance sought from private sector. He said the
PHDEB has identified biggest markets for mango export, which
are China, Korea, Iran, India and South Africa which countries
were thickly populated with handsome buying power. During
market infrastructure development it was revealed that brother
country Iran
with population of 60 million was seeking for taste of mango
and Pakistani mango would have to capture Iranian market.
Shamoon
said three irradiation plants would be established in Lahore,
Karachi and Peshawar to prevent from fruit fly attack,
micro-biological control of diseases and to increase shelf
life of mango. The PHDEB CDO Muhammad Iqbal and assistant
manager research and development Muhammad Younis Khan were
also present in the meeting. A large numbers of growers belong
to mango growers association attended the meeting which were
include Malik Bashir Awan, Major Syed Zahid Bokhari (rtd),
Muhammad Farid Khakwani, Muhammad Iqbal, Syed Khizar Abbass
Bokhari, Nasrullah Khan Tareen, Maqbool Hussein Janglah,
Muzaffar Hayat Khakwani, Muhammad Salim Khan, Malik Imam
Bukash, Shujja Khan, Malik Muhammad Ali Khokhar, Javed Akhtar
Jamali, Malik Muhammad Faisal, Abdul Hamid Bathi, Malik Fahim,
Malik Mushtaq and Younis Khan.
