World best dairy farming
Almarai is the largest dairy farming and processing
operation in the Middle-East. Based in Saudi Arabia, their
spectacular growth is due to a commitment to exceptionally
high quality standards and Almarai are now widely held as
the benchmark for other companies in the region to emulate.
With full vertical integration from seven ultra modern farms
through to processing factories for all types of dairy
products, it consists of an integrated solution of all dairy
issues, from fodder production to marketing of end product.
Almarai has already over 60% of the Saudi market for dairy
products and are a household name throughout the Arab world.
According to Alvan Blanch, their exceptionally high
standards have enabled the farming industries to achieve
milk yields that are 25% higher than the best European farms
and this is in a desert-to-semi-desert location!
Total control of feed input is a key factor in this
exceptional performance and in 2002 Almarai decided to start
producing their own maize flakes (a thicker version of corn
flakes breakfast cereal) which is a key element of the
cattle diet.
According to another report, since its inception and its
initial focus on dairy products, the company has
successfully expanded into other allied food businesses
including fruit juices (in 1999) and, recently, into the
bakery business. It is expected that the fruit juice and
bakery business will contribute respectively to 7% and 16%
of Almarai’s gross profit by 2012 vs. 6% and 10% in 2007.
It is expected that the company is bound to pursue the
acquisition path within the food and beverage sector in
order to further leverage its very strong brand and
established distribution capabilities.
The company was founded in 1976 by HH Prince Sultan Bin
Mohammed bin Saud Al Kabeer and was publicly listed in
August 2005. The company’s vision is encapsulated in its
corporate statement: “To be the preferred choice in food
products, promoting nutrition, health and well being in the
Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
