SunFlower Storage
Storage of sunflower seed requires special care, as is the case for all oil-containing seed. After threshing, the seed should be dried in the sun to bring down the seed moisture content to 8-10%. High temperature and high moisture content are detrimental to seed viability. Unlike soybean, large sunflower seeds maintain their viability longer than small seeds under all conditions. If the seeds are force dried, temperatures above 50oC adversely affect viability. Storage bins should be cleaned and treated with insecticides in order to avoid insect attack. Seed with low oil content have an increased phytomelan layer and are less susceptible to insect attack.
