Cultivars
In the late 1950"s, more than two dozen indigenous cultivars were tested for economic yield in Punjab, and in Sindh a local multi-headed CV. 'Black Sayar' was tested in 1964-65. Since then, numberous introductions of exotic types have been made from several parts of the world. Most sunflower cultivars are open-pollinated and depend on honeybees as pollinators. The exotic cultivars recommended for cultivation were 'Noor', 'Shams', and 'Ho-1'. As research progressed, high-yielding hybrids like 'NK-212', 'Hysun-33', and 'NK-265' were released for commercial cultivation in 1977, 1979 and 1986 respectively. More recently, hybrids recommended for cultivation are 'Suncross-24' and 'sunbred-265'. 'Euroflor', a new hybrid yielding 2345 kg seeds/ha, out yielded all other hybrids in 1988-89 trials. Another open-pollinated cultivar selected from 'Record' is now ready for release. The population and activities of honeybees are restricted in Pakistan because of high temperatures, and high-yielding hybrids have performed poorly in many instances. If it necessary to select hybrids with high self-compatibility to overcome the lack of pollinators. Considerable progress has been made in this respect. Yield The average national seed yield on all types of soils and conditions varies from 500-980 kg/ha. However, under favourable conditions at experiment stations, seed yields as high as 2500 kg/ha have been obtained. Under rainfed conditions, the seed yield varies from 400-800 kg/ha.
