Since its inception, FAO has worked to alleviate poverty and hunger by promoting agricultural development, improved nutrition and the pursuit of food security. FAO gives practical help to developing countries through a wide range of technical assistance projects.

FAO collects, analyses, interprets and disseminates information relating to nutrition, food, agriculture, forestry and fisheries. It provides farmers, scientists, traders and government planners with the information they need to make rational decisions on planning, investment, marketing, research and training.

FAO provides independent advice on agricultural policy and planning, and the administrative and legal structures needed for development, strategies towards rural development increased food security and the development, increased food security and the alleviation of poverty.

FAO approves international standards and helps frame international conventions and agreements and regularly hosts major conference, technical meetings and consultations of experts.

FAO in Pakistan: The first agreement between FAO and the Government of Pakistan for the provision of technical assistance was signed on 17 June 1951. Over the past 50 years FAO has implemented 225 projects in Pakistan! with a total funding of US$ 119.5 million, besides participating in 126 regional projects, These development projects and programmes have led to significant improvements in the agricultural sector.

As a follow up to the World Food Summit, held in 1996, FAO has assisted Pakistan in the formulation of a comprehensive strategy, National agriculture Development Horizon 2010. Moreover, the launching of FAO's Special Programme for Food Security initiative will also assist Pakistan in increasing agricultural production.

In the field of human resource development, especially the government counterparts, 142 officials have been awarded scholarships in foreign universities, besides providing in-county training to 37000 government officials. These experts are valuable assets of the county for sustainable food and agriculture development.

Working Together for an International Alliance Against Hunger:

The Alliance will bring together the strengths of different groups into a single effort. It will include: food producers and consumers with first-hand knowledge of the problems they face; international organisations giving technical knowledge and advice and providing a forum for debate; agribusiness firms, scientists and academics spurring innovation; the many donors funding development programmes and projects; policy-makers from rich and poor countries charting their nations' roadmap for progress; and private individuals, religious groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) raising awareness about the issue of hunger.

As this Alliance takes shape, leaders in an increasing number of countries are boldly puffing the fight against hunger at the forefront of national priorities, realising that only when people are well-fed can they take part in a nation's economic and social advancement. FAO applauds their courage and urges others to join them.

International Alliance Against Hunger is this year's World Food Day theme. It is a call to action, with a view to taking the concept of a global partnership and making it a reality: working together to reduce poverty and to guarantee the world's citizens a basic human right-freedom from hunger.
