COMSTECH hosts Inter-Ministerial meeting on Biotechnology

COMSTECH played host to Inter-Ministerial meeting on
Biotechnology held at Bhurban, Pakistan during 7-8 September
2004. This 2-day event was held occasion COMSTECH invited
Ministers of Science &
 Technology
, scientists, biotechnology experts and scholars from the
OIC region to deliberate the issue of implementing to bring
the Biotechnology into mainstream development plans of the
OIC countries . For this biotechnology and its applications
for widespread utilization in the OIC members states.
Participants of this meeting emphasized on formulation of
progressive polices for the overall socio-economic
development of the region through biotechnology .The
participants praised efforts of COMSTECH on publication of
two documents Model Biosafety Guidelines and Islamic
Biomedical Ethics: Issues and Resources.
Taking lead from COMSTECH’s initiative on biotechnology they
unanimously agreed on spreading biotechnology as a tangible
tool of social and economic uplifting of the Muslim
countries .The idea of setting up a National Biotechnology
Cooperation Fund for cooperation among the OIC countries in
the field of biotechnology was discussed and it was agreed
to further explore the suggestion.
