10.4 milliion bales cotton production
KARACHI-Cotton production this year in Pakistan would possibly
be around 10.4 million bales one x-farm basis (Punjab 8.2 million, Sindh 2.1 million and
Baluchistan 0.1 million) .This was announced by Cotton crop Assessment Committee at a
meeting in Karachi on Dec 22, 2001,
chaired by Adviser to Chief Executive on Food and Agriculture
Dr. Shafi Niaz after taking into
account past years experience and available observation and
field data.
The committee was briefed by functionaries and private sector
stakeholders on current status of
cotton crop with particular reference to impact of weather and
insect-pests behaviour at this
stage of the season particularly after last meeting held a
month ago.
This season cotton crop was sown on 3.125 million hectares as
against envisaged target of 2.56
million hectares and last year's area sown of 2.93 million
hectares, thereby showing improvement
by 22% and 7%, respectively. Province wise position reflected
7.3% increase over last year in
Punjab, whereas in Sindh it remained less by 1.1%.
The Committee noted the area growing tendency in Baluchistan
and the NWFP and observed that by
overcoming cotton marketing problems in these areas a much
larger area could come under cotton
crop.
Reviewing seed cotton arrival pattern it was noticed that
based on last five years averages 63%
of gross arrivals were made till 30th November. The arrivals
as on 1st December 2001 were
reportedly placed at 6.312 million bales.
The committee was informed that in Punjab due to excessive
attack of pinkbollworm there has also
been growing problem of yellow spots thus impairing quality.
It was reported that Pinkbollworm
and Army worm attack this season was heavier compared with
past seasons.
The meeting was attended by representatives of all related
public and private sector
organisations/agencies, including directors of
Federal/provincial Research Institutes, Officials
of Provincial Crop Reporting Services, Federal Bureau of
Statistics, Trading Corporation of
Pakistan, Chairman APTMA, PCGA, Director KGA and grower
members from Sindh and Punjab.
