ADBP to give Rs 7.2-b loans to Sindh growers


HYDERABAD, Sept 16 (APP)- Sindh Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forests, Hassan Ali Chanhio has said that Agricultural Development Bank of Pakistan (ADBP) would provide loans of Rs 7.2 billion to the growers of Sindh for cultivation of their crops in Rabi and Kharif seasons this year. Presiding over a meeting of Agriculture Credit Advisory Board at Darbar Hall Mirpurkhas on Saturday evening, the Minister said besides ADBP other commercial banks of the country would also provide loans to the growers.

He assured that these loans will be provided only to growers for cultivation of their agricultural land instead of provision to agro-based industries. He advised the small growers to get their pass books prepared so that they could also take advantage of these loans to be provided by ADBP and other commercial banks. Keeping in view the shortage of water, loans will also be provided to the growers this year for installation of tube-wells, levelling of land and preparation of 'sim nulla,' the Minister said.

The Minister took serious notice of the alleged demand of bribe by bank officers for grant of loans to the growers and warned them to avoid such tactics otherwise, strict action will be initiated against them. He asked the growers to contact their respective Nazims if the bank officers demanded illegal gratification for release of loans. Earlier, the Minister was informed that out of total allocation of Rs 7280 million by ADBP for Sindh during the year 2000-2001, Rs 4531.100 million has been earmarked for productive loans, while Rs 1131.982 million have been fixed for provision of development loans to the growers.

The Minister was informed that Rs 57.817 million have been allocated for provision of loans for purchase of tractors, Rs 59.845 million for purchase of agricultural equipment, Rs 130.264 million for dairy farming, Rs 2.982 million for poultry, Rs 699.556 million for tube-wells and water courses, Rs 48.556 million for livestock, Rs 63.870 million for flower- farming, Rs 11.777 million for fisheries and Rs 58.115 million for provision of loans to growers for other agricultural necessities.

The Minister was also informed that Rs 110 million has been allocated for provision of loans to the growers of Karachi, Rs 280 million for Thatta, Rs 870 million for Sukkur, Rs 750 million for Shikarpur, Rs 900 million for Khairpur, Rs 550 million for Larkana, Rs 990 million for Nawabshah, Rs 800 million for Mirpurkhas, Rs 880 million for Sanghar, Rs 625 million for Hyderabad, Rs 300 million for Dadu and Rs 225 million for the growers of Badin.

The Minister was informed that so far 520,547 pass books have been issued to the growers while the process of issuance of remaining 236,147 pass books in the province is underway. The Sindh Food and Agriculture Minister was informed that 157,433 pass books in Hyderabad, 128,890 pass books in Sukkur, 92,576 pass books in Larkana and 137,648 pass books in Mirpurkhas had already been issued to the growers.

Besides the representatives of commercial banks and growers, the meeting was also attended by Zila Nazim Mirpurkhas, Syed Shafqat Ali Shah Jilani, District Coordination Officer, Mirpurkhas, Mir Hussain Ali, Director General Agriculture Extension, Ghulam Rasool Ahpan and Director General Agriculture Research, Karam Khan Kaleri.
