Three-day celebration in connection with Farmers' Day
PESHAWER-Forest Institute held a three-day celebration in
connection with Farmers' Day in Hilkou Water shed, Mansehra
aimed at exposing efforts made by the project to all the
stakeholders as an answer to the emerging challenges faced by
the people of hilly areas. According to a press release issued
here, the celebration captured attention of a large number of
participants including researchers, development organizations,
government officials, farming communities and civil society.
The PARDYP has been working in Mansehra since 1998 and was jointly
initiated by Pakistan Forest Institute, Peshawar and the
International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development Nepal
in response to growing problems faced by the communities
regarding their natural resource management and decreasing
fertility of the farming lands.
This Farmers Day was also organized with an aim to open field of
activities for a wide range of public and research community
to extend its findings to all the agencies involved in the
same field and to help develope a network of stakeholder
organization for exchange of experiences, as the PARDYP, being
involved in the fields of agro horticulture research, forestry
and socio-economic development, had a long experience in
finding out root causes of the problem and suggesting suitable
alternatives.
In order to arrange visits to site activities in various
fields like tea plantations, improved rice varietal trails,
experimental sites on different varieties of maize,
bio-fertilizer trials and streamside plantation in the project
area, field trips were arranged for all farmers and other
participants where guests from national and international
organizations provided useful guidlines and shared their
experiences on site with the farmers.
In the function, an exhibition was also arranged by different
organisations departments with the objective to create
awareness among people about different alternative energy
sources, importance of honey-bee rearing, identification of
medical plants found in the area and their importance and
market opportunities. A show was also held at the Government
Malkora High School of the area where different schools of the
area took part in the declamation contest, drawing competition
and other
