Sindh Agriculture Minister directs forming of teams

KARACHI The Provincial Agriculture Minister, Hasan Ali Chaniho, Saturday directed that teams of agriculture experts be formed as part of steps to be taken for attaining self-sufficiency in the production of basic and pre-basic seeds of wheat and rice.

Presiding over the 24th meeting of Provincial Seed Council, the Minister called for immediate constitution of teams each having 10 experts who would be imparted training at the agricutlure training institutes in Sindh and Punjab so as to prepare them to play their role in the production of certified seeds and arrangements could be made for meeting Province's requirements.

In this regard an 8-member committee was setup to be headed by DG Agriculture Extention whereas the members would include DG Agriculture Research, MD Sindh Seed Corporation, progressive farmers and breeders of wheat and rice.

The committee will select 50 experts in the first phase out of which 30 would be picked after their interviews and scrutiny of their educational qualifications. Mr Chaniho said the selected experts will have to get training from cultivation of a crop to its cutting, processing, ginning,
thrashing, irrigation, farm management and other related training. They will then have to work at government and non-government farms and bring an increase in the productivity through their performance so as to meet the requirement of seed for the Province.

The Secretary Agriculture, Abdul Rasheed Memon, said on the occasion that Sindh's farmers cannot be left at the mercy of private seed corporations of Sindh and Punjab. The Minister, he pointed out, has already the statistical data of seed requirements to Agriculture Research Department and Sindh Seed Corporation. He said the basic and pre-basic seeds will be produced in cooperation with government farms and zamindars. He said attention will be paid on such seeds only which are in great demand and could also help increase the per acre yield.
