Honey being exported after attaining self-sufficiency

ISLAMABAD-Pakistan has attained self-sufficiency in honey production and has started export of the commodity to Gulf and other countries.
Honey produced from plants is of prime quality and can be sold at good price in the markets abroad.

This was stated by Dr. Nasreen Muzaffar, Chief Scientific Officer, Honeybee Research Institute (HRI), Pakistan Agriculture Research Centre (PARC) in an interview with the news agency here on Monday.

Beekeeping has become a profession of income generating and existence of 240,000 colonies of introduced honey bee in all the four provinces and Azad Kashmir proves its advancement and success, she added.

She urged the adoption of modern techniques to get good quality honey. The beekeepers should encourage bees to get their food from natural sources like flowers and plants instead of using sugar in rainy or cold season.

Dr. Nasreen said, Honeybee Research Institute trains people in beekeeping through different courses arranged by the institute because inexperienced people squeeze the unripe beehives and extract honey mixed with bee parts which could be hazardous for consumption.

The Institute has organised 16 training courses at national level, 67 courses at regional level for farmers, professionals of agriculture and forest departments, workers of social-welfare departments, women organisations, students and boy scouts leaders from across the country.

Honey Bee Research Institutes has emerged as a leading and well respected institute at national level, she said.

It has organised, strengthened and coordinated Honeybee research and management in the country and is a well recognised institutes of its kind in the SAARC region, she concluded
