Cotton growers not being paid fixed price
NAWABSHAH: The cotton growers were in financial crisis due to
low rates of cotton in the market, due to conflict between
ginners and the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP). The
government has fixed Rs780 for 40 KG of cotton but the growers
are not being paid the fixed price of cotton. According to
growers the ginners are paying not more than Rs660.
It was learnt that provincial minister for agriculture during
a meeting with Nazims of all the districts assured that the
TCP and ginners would expedite purchase of cotton at all the
three centres of TCP established at Mirpurkhas, Nawabshah and
Sukkur. Growers alleged that the decision of payment of fixed
price to growers was taken at a meeting of District Nazims
with the provincial agriculture minister but it remained
unimplemented.
President, Small Growers Association, Hakim Khaskeli said that
despite the decision of provincial minister the ginners had
totally refused to pay not more than Rs750 per 40 KG. While
they had started deducting 4 KG of cotton bag instead of 2 KG
earlier decided in this regard.
He said that the 17 ginning factory owners of Nawabshah had
joined hands on rate due to which growers had sustained loss
of millions. He said that the TCP had shown purchase only on
papers, making no payments while ginners were not paying price
fixed by the government.
