Agri depatt suggests tips for cotton growers

Lahore-Agriculture Department Punjab has suggested some tips for cotton growers to obtain contamination free cotton and ultimately to fetch good price.

A spokesman of the department said in a statement that careless handling of cotton during picking and transport results in its contamination with moisture, immature bolls, twigs, leaves, human and animal hair, cigarettes, jute twines and ropes, shoppers,
plastic fibers, toffee wrappers etc.

"Due to these contaminants, farmers do not get good price of their cotton,'' he observed.

To avoid contamination, he suggested the cotton growers to take the following precautions during picking and transport of cotton. Start cotton picking only when 50 percent bolls are open. Do not pick half-opened bills Pick cotton when dew dries off.

Pickers should completely cover their head with a cloth made of cotton and use cotton cloth as picking `pallies.' Begin picking form lower parts of plants and go upwards gradually.

Do not store picked cotton in shady and moist places. Store it at a dry place in the sun on a plastic sheet, cotton cloth or turpaulin.

Before weighing pick out the contaminants carefully from the picked seed cotton.
Fill the picked cotton in cotton bags only and use cotton ropes/twines for stitching these bags. While transporting seed cotton to ginning factory cover the cotton filled tractor trolleys with cotton cloth or cotton made nets (Trangars). Do not use jute cloth for covering trolleys.
