Chashma Right Bank Canal-III nearing completion
LAHORE-The 90 mile third and final stage of Chashma Right Bank
Canal along with 200 miles of flood carrier channels have been
substantially completed by Wapda in association with the Turk
contractors 101 days ahead of the scheduled date.
Informed sources said that a joint inspection/ survey of
November 16 last by the teams of Wapda, CRBC Stage-III
Consultants - a joint venture of M/s Harza Engineering USA,
Sorgeah Consultants France, National Development Consultants
Pakistan, and the contractors M/s Tekser of Turkey agreed to
the substantial completion of all the works under the Contract
65 of the Chashma Right Bank Irrigation Project (CRBIP)
Stage-III and cleared for 'taking over' certification
documents preparation.
The project was divided into five contract packages for its
execution. These included two contracts for 94 miles long main
canal. First of these contracts for construction of 4 miles
long main canal to inter-link stage-III with Stage-II of the
canal was
completed in December 1996.
The recently substantially completed second 'Contract 65' of
90 miles long main canal construction also includes 200 miles
of flood carrier channels. said the sources.
Messrs Tekser of Turkey had mobilised at site in September
1997 to complete the contracted works by February 2002.
However, the joint efforts of the contractors, consultants and
Wapda management have been successful in accomplishing the
project works 101 days ahead of schedule, and the surrounding
lands have started receiving irrigation supplies from the new
canal reach earlier than expected.
Sources explained that the area commanded by CRBC Stage-III is
some 362,000 acres including 126,000 acres of Dera Ismail Khan
(NWFP) and 236,000 acres of Dera Ghazi Khan (Punjab).
Discharge allocation for the stage-III is said to be 2,853
cusecs which includes 1,053 cusecs share for NWFP and 1,800
cusecs for the Punjab. With the completion of stage-III,
farmers along the total length of the canal are now using its
water for irrigation, and have already begun accruing its
benefits, and will also gain in terms of an early crop yield
due to before-time completion of the CRBC Stage-III, sources
asserted They claimed that the other three contracts for water
distribution system are also progressing satisfactorily.
The first (52 mile) and second (24 mile) stages of the Chashma
Right Bank Canal were completed in December 1986 and June 1992
respectively. The entire canal commands a total of about
606,000 acres area of Dera Ismail Khan (NWFP) and Dera Ghazi
Khan (Punjab) districts.
