Oilseed board to import seedlings from Malaysia
SUKKUR: Pakistan Oilseeds Development Board (PODB) Sindh plans
to import one lac (0.1 milion) seedlings of oil-palm from
Malaysia in the current year, to meet the growing demand in
the coastal districts of Thatta (Sindh) and Uthal (Balochistan).
This was stated by Director PODB Sindh, Waris Shaikh here on
Friday. He said the Board had a balance quantity of 37518
plants and there was a demand of some 71,000 plants in these
two districts. He said in addition to promoting the
non-traditional oilseed crops in the country, the PODB was
also concentrating on introduction of oil-palm plantation in
the coastal belt of Sindh and Balochistan with the
collaboration of Malaysian govt.
The PODB Director said, there existed a large potential of
oil-palm sowing in the coastal belt of Thatta, Badin, and
Uthal. He stated that in 1998-99 PODB had imported 135,000
oil-palm seedlings from Malaysian Palm-oil Board, which are
kept in two nurseries of Gharo near Thatta in Sindh and Uthal
in Balochistan. He said, both the nurseries are in good
condition, as in the first attempt the PODB had succeeded to
save 50 per cent plants. The plantation was made on private,
public sector and state lands, totalling 445 acres, he added.
He said due to vigorous campaign carried out by field staff of
PODB Sindh, a large number of farmers in lower Sindh had shown
keen interest for sowing oil-palm plants on their lands. He
also pointed to successful plantation of sunflower crop in
Sukkur, Shikarpur and Larkana districts.September
