Farmers to
get Rs.780/ 40 kg for Phutti
ISLAMABAD-Minister for Commerce, Abdul Razak Dawood said on
Wednesday that government has fixed Rs.780 per 40 kg as
procurement price of grade-III seed cotton (Phutti) to protect
the rights of the growers at all cost.
"I want to convey the farmers that government is committed to
protecting their interest at all cost", he remarked. Talking
to the newsmen, prior to his departure for Washington here at
the airport on September 4, the Minister said that government
has fixed Rs.780 per 40 kg Grade-III cotton for the growers
and reiterated to intervene in case of any decrease in the
fixed price of Rs.780 per 40 kg.
The Minister said that he has directed the Chainman TCP to
make immediate arrangements for procumbent of cotton and start
purchasing of cotton of grade-III, if the prices of phutti
fall below Rs.780 per 40 kg. Dawood said that he has also
directed the Chairman to activate its procumbent centers set
up for the purpose. He further said that the government also
wanted that farmers should get a better price of their
commodity and added that was why government has fixed the
price of cotton for the farmers.
The Minister said an contamination free cotton act will be
introduced soon after its approval from the cabinet to further
strengthen the existing Pakistan Cotton Standard Institute (PCSI).
To a question ,he said that provincial governments have
already taken a number of measures for producing
contamination-free cotton in their respective provinces. He
said that in this respect the governments have directed the
growers and cotton dealers to avoid using gunny bags for
putting cotton and to ensure contamination free cotton for
better price, he added.
He said that government has established a center in Rahim Yar
Khan for producing contamination free cotton and added that he
would visit the center in November next to know about the
steps taken by the center in this respect. To a question, he
said Pakistan has achieved self sufficiency in wheat
production and become wheat exporting country. He expressed
his determination that Pakistan would remain as wheat
exporting country.
